Mead Details
This mead was made using California Yellow Star Thistle Honey. This mead was aged in 2 different Bourbon barrels. 9 months in the first one, and 10 months in the second one. Both were Detroit City Distillery Butcher’s Cut Bourbon barrels.
This mead was approximately 2 years old before bottling. The yeast we used was Lalvin C.
Karl’s Tasting Notes
Long ago, now as of writing this, Manical collaborated with a fantastic meadery called Boneflower. Sadly, Boneflower closed its doors. The Bone Garden here was such a collaboration that shall never see its true potential fulfilled. So, we created this mead before me to honor them and still let this mead see the light of day.
The nose of this mead is all about the honey. From the first impression, a balanced sweet honey nose with underlying “tannins”. I quote it because with a single inhale, its quite difficult to pinpoint what specific notes are hidden under it all. More research! Its an aroma reminiscent of vanilla and blooming flowers; a woody sweet scent that bolsters the broad honey notes upfront
On the first taste, I register two things: the sweet honey once again, naturally, as well as a barrel note. Now, I’ve not been specifically told if this version of the Bone Garden was barrel aged or not, as of this tasting. I’m near-positive that’s a barrel! A sweet whiskey’s toffee-wood blends harmoniously with a lush, balanced honey nectar. Its sweet, but brought into a profile that prevents a cloying presence. Easy and delicious
