Mead Details
Here we have a blueberry raspberry mead with vanilla.
This mead started as 2 separate meads that we blended.
A blueberry mead and a raspberry mead.
To start, the blueberry mead was made with local blueberries. A connection that Karl landed from the Ypsi Farmers Market. And local Dexter Wildflower honey. The yeast we used for this was Lalvin C, and it was started in August of 2024
The raspberry mead was made using Mexican Wildflower Honey and D47 yeast and was started in October of 2024.
We blended these together and added Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla to finish it off. This mead is approximately 11-13 months old before bottling.
Karl’s tasting notes
Now behold the resurrection of a very dear mead! In the times of a fledgling Maniacal was the fabled Blu Blood, an impeccable yet simple blueberry-raspberry mead. I recall it as a transitional time for us, when our meads began to take shape into our staple style we produce today. This remake should be delightfully nostalgic for our OG supporters and a modern sequel for our more recent additions. Let’s get started!
Time to test the ol’ Memory Palace, to see how even the nose compares! Remarkably, it hits just like it did with a touch more. Research. Needs more research, heh. Deep berry notes that blend with florals and honey. I can pick out the difference between the raspberry tarts and the sweet honey-blended blueberry. The more I open it up, the more I can enjoy this experience.
Now… the taste, finally ha! A smooth, sharp-in-the-jaw tart and sweet wave. Blueberry skin, and raspberry seed with a finishing of vanilla. It was, honestly, a wild first taste. Less sweet forward than the original, this version focuses on the individual berry notes with the vanilla tying them together. The more I sip, the more the velvety backbone of vanilla reveals itself. Much like I thought, this modern version is more “professional” in its presentation. It emphasizes each component in a much more impressive way than the predecessor. Good for sipping and appreciating. Say less, I’m in.
