Mead Details

This mead was made using Alfalfa honey and local Maple syrup from H&H Sugarbush in Chelsea Michigan.

After fermentation, we added fresh roasted Ethiopian Guji coffee from our friends at River Tree Coffee out of East Lansing.

We also added 2 different types of vanilla,

Indonesian and Madagascar bourbon.

The yeast we used is D47.

This mead was 10 months old before bottling.

Karl’s tasting notes,

After many, many moons of selling out of our last coffee mead, in steps Mr. Affogato! Long may he reign! That’s right, long term Maniacal enjoyers might remember a brief time with a coffee mead on tap, but now I am delighted to try our first ever bottled coffee mead! This time around we have very finely sourced ingredients from across the world and locally and I’m quite excited!

First, the nose, and the first notes are indeed that lovely aroma of the roasted Ethiopian Guji coffee beans. Within the roasted beans, the rich, sweet, notes from the alfalfa honey perk up followed by an intoxicating vanilla bean undertone.

After the first sip I get a surprising note that is specific to the Ethiopian coffee, a stark bitter bite followed by a crash of toasty coffee and robust honey sweet. As one continues their journey into this mead, the two vanilla notes from our two types of beans wrestle for your attention under a sweet and semi-bitter coffee profile. The notes of java, vanilla, and alfalfa honey just continue to play off each other in a toasty union of flavor that should delight mead and coffee drinkers alike.
