Double Chocolate Reaper What You Sow
Now we’re getting somewhere! Bit of history on this one. Awhile back we made a test mead called Reaper What You Sow that included, you guessed it, Carolina Reapers. Now don’t let that turn you off yet! Hear me out. Well the thing is, it was tasty, so tasty that it inspired some of our regulars to want to grow us more! Fast forward to now, we have this barrel aged, chocolate infused multi-berried remake, boasting 43 customer and locally grown “Chocolate Reapers” (they’re normal Carolina Reapers but more smokey and have a distinct chocolate-brown hue). May I present: the Double Chocolate Reaper What you Sow!
Now the nose is deceptive. You are either going to think it smells not very spicy or rather spicy. However, even on a first (careful) inhale you immediately smell the rich chocolate notes, from the cocoa nibs and the sinister promise of spice from the Chocolate Reapers. As you open it up you can grasp the notes of mixed berries, the cranberry and cherries mostly, but the chocolate is doing some serious work!
Tasting this will be a pleasure, I can tell, but even if you arent a “spice lord” like myself I find the flavor speaks for itself: The first taste is a wave. You get sweet chocolate, spicy tingles, the smokey-sweet pepper flavors (if you can handle spice), following the deep fruits and the heat. This one is indeed spicy. Each sip however, is a spicy-sweet love letter of blended harmonious flavor. No part of the profile is ignored and if you can just push past that spice and heat, there is real nuance. Im afraid that many will fear the Reaper, but just know that what we’ve sown in this barrel is worth that sweet embrace with death.
